| Other Facts: | I have had five brain surgeries to correct the
symptoms of a birth defect. Chiari Malformation (type 1) is a rare
deformation of the brain stem. In my case (a type 1 case) the cerebellum was
mis-shappen, and was partially down inside my spinal column. This caused
several problems that needed surgery to correct. I had hoped to be able to put
up more information this. That hope was back when I was at three surgeries. I
have since had new symptoms arisen that have shown I have a second condition;
Syringomyelia. Syrigomyelia is a condition where spinal fluid travels through
the spinal cord. Build ups of the fluid cause cysts called syrinxes. I have a
good size syrinx in my neck that has caused me to lose most of the motor
coordination and quite a bit of physical sensation from my right hand. There is
a surgery that was recommended for this by one doctor. However, futher
consultation with my new Neurosurgeon has brought me to the conclusion that if
the symptoms are not getting worse (which they aren't - knock on wood) then the
risk is too great, as there is only a slim chance things will improve. I am more than happy to discuss it via e-mail if anybody has any questions. |
